Winter was already well established in the tundra. Everywhere was covered by a thick layer of snow. Weakest animals were already wintering warmly in their dens. Few birds ventured further in the sky, scanning the ground hoping to find a prey.
Not far from the wood, where grass and roots seemed more accessible, wild horses, which seemed immunized against the cold, were grazing peacefully.
Two chestnut horses were standing away from their group. Reckless, they seemed to be twins preferring to stand and eat alone. This does not prevent them from time to time to take a look at the rest of the group in case they would depart.
A heavy silence suddenly traversed the plain. In a sudden and synchronized flight, the birds disappeared from the sky. Nature seemed frozen with fear and not only because of the cold.
A crack was heard in the distance. The horses looked in the same direction as one at the same time. They dared not move. Their fixed nostril, teeth clenched, ears and eyes clear riveted in the direction of the noise they heard, they freezed and waited calmly.
Another cracking came up. It was enough for the rest of the group to take a frantic gallop in the opposite direction. Our two brave friends waited a few seconds. At the sight of the white wolf that walked in, not broken down, as to avoid scaring them. The twins did not ask their rest nor did they took time to think, they scampered to the rest of the group. Tonight, under the moonlight, the wolves would howled out of rage, they would not eat horse ...probably they would not even eat at all...
